How to Sleep Well
As an ENT specialist in Singapore, giving a talk about why sleep is important for you and your family gave me a great opportunity to debunk sleep myths and educate everyone about good sleep habits. We discussed the dangers of obstructive sleep apnea in both children and adults, followed by real life vignettes of my own patients. Did you know snoring may be the first sign of underlying obstructive sleep apnea in Singapore?
Recent research on the topic of sleep has shed a lot of light on the mysteries of sleep, including the shortterm and longterm health risks posed by not sleeping well and not sleeping adequately. Sleep ultimately is a subject that lies close to everyone’s hearts as good sleep can be elusive: Just because you want to sleep well, doesn’t mean you can sleep well.

Here are Dr Annabelle’s sleep Dos and Don’ts summarized for your benefit:
- Do lose weight gradually through diet and regular exercise
- Do use alkaline saline douche to clean your nose gently especially if you have allergy and sinus problems
- Do apply some Vaseline as a simple buffer if you are prone to nosebleeds
- Do try to sleep on your side instead of your back if you have breathing problems when asleep.
- Do come for a thorough check up if you have persistent blocked nose or nosebleeds or snore and have difficulties breathing at night
- Don’t smoke
- Don’t drink alcohol or caffeine before bedtime.
- Don’t exercise just before bedtime.
- Don’t sleep with your phone/ipad near your head.
- Don’t dig your nose.
- Don’t use the decongestant sprays sold off the counter, for more than a week.
- Don’t stress yourself out before bedtime
- Don’t ignore the snoring and breathing problems
