Vertigo, Dizziness and Nausea: What’s The Problem? How To Get Better

Dr Annabelle ENT has previously suffered a bad attack of vertigo herself so she knows exactly what patients with dizziness or vertigo have to put up with.[/caption]

Are you one of the thousands of people who suffer from recurrent episodes of vertigo, dizziness or imbalance problems in Singapore? You’re probably wondering why I put my own photo under this post…Well, as an ENT specialist in Singapore, I’ve experienced a severe attack of vertigo (spinning sensation) myself and let me tell you, it really wasn’t pleasant. I felt like vomiting and the room just wouldn’t stop spinning! If I kept my head really still, the dizziness (giddiness) and vertigo temporarily improved. I did get better in the end, but not without getting dragged to the Emergency department by my husband who wanted me to undergo an MRI scan (which I didn’t by the way). I diagnosed myself with Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo (BPPV) and treated myself successfully with the Epley manoeuvre.

Anyway, there really is no need for anyone to keep on suffering repeated episodes of dizziness, giddiness, imbalance and vertigo in Singapore because most importantly, we should find out why you keep on getting these attacks. If we can identify the reason, then we can attempt to treat the underlying condition leading to the symptoms of vertigo and dizziness. Sometimes, deafness or hearing loss can also accompany the dizzy problem.

We take our good balance for granted! Many people think that the balance system is solely due to the inner ears but in actual fact, our balance is controlled by having a healthy brain as the “supervisor”, while the eyes, inner ears and the nerve endings of the trunk, abdomen and lower limbs are the “team members” all working constantly together to feed the right information about our head and body position to the brain. The brain can then adjust and readjust our head and body position to maintain steady balance. If anything happens to the “supervisor” and its “team”, then dizziness, vertigo and imbalance will result.

So what can you do about vertigo, dizziness and imbalance? Well, I think if you suffer from these symptoms, you should see a top ENT specialist in Singapore who has a lot of experience dealing with such dizzy problems. Dizzy patients tend to puzzle many family physicians and even some ENT doctors in Singapore, as they may be more used to seeing patients with runny noses (rhinitis and sinusitis) than knowing how to manage the more complex dizzy patient. I spent a lot of time at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen’s Square in London and the Toronto General Hospital in Canada, learning how to look after dizzy patients because I felt that this was the most difficult and challenging area in ENT (runny and blocked noses are far easier to sort out 😉 )
